Long-term, consistent operations that will support juvenile migration in spring and summer and keep water temperatures cooler in the Columbia and Snake Rivers are included in a new draft of the Council’s Columbia River Basin Fish and Wildlife Program. Other top priorities include maintaining critical assets like hatcheries and fish screens and continuing to invest in habitat restoration projects.

The Council approved the Shoshone-Bannock Tribe’s Waterwheel Hatchery Program Step 1 review and a recommendation to Bonneville to fund non-recurring maintenance for fish screens in FY2025.

The Columbia Basin Partnership estimates that 35% of historical populations of anadromous salmon and steelhead in the Columbia River Basin have been lost. Efforts to reintroduce fish populations to areas where they were once abundant generally relies on the help from hatchery fish.

Council members approved funding for nonrecurring maintenance of fish screens and hatcheries.

The Council was briefed on the continued support for addressing non-recurring maintenance needs for past fish and wildlife investments in hatcheries, fish screens, and mitigation lands.

The Council invites your review and comment on the Independent Scientific Review Panel’s Final Report: Review of Anadromous Fish Habitat and Hatchery Project. Comment by March 10, 2022.
